Ambiguity is a killer when it comes to tone. You need to convey tone correctly, because everything can be read a variety of ways. I try to convey it through emphasis, emboldening words which need it, capitalizing words which are yelled, combining the two to really emphasize something.

But it can also be helpful if another character is clarifying for you. In panel 4, Therron ends a sentence with an ominous “…but.” Sure, some might read it and know that it’s meant to be ominous, but thankfully we have Karl clarifying in panel 5. Now, thanks to that little exchange, it’s clear how the text is being said. And that is important.
